Tropical watercolour painting tutorial

After visiting Colombia for the summer holidays, I feel very inspired by all the animals, plants and landscapes we saw (travel blog coming soon). I painted this toucan using a technique I call freestyle painting where I improvise the design while I paint.

This kind of painting is very intuitive so you just have to follow your gut and the tips I’m sharing if you want to try it out. It’s a good exercise to learn to think fast and to stop overthinking!

On this video I’m sharing with you my tips for this kind of painting, including composition, layering of washes, balance, how to know when to stop, etc.

Here’s the list of all the art supplies I used:

  • Canson watercolour paper

  • Kuretake watercolours set X24

  • Bamboo brush

  • Winsor & Newton white ink

  • Dip pen
